TKS Develops World’s Fastest 100,000 cph Press
Full Implementation at Kyoto Shimbun’s New Factory
To be installed at the new Kyoto Shimbun (newspaper) plant, Tokyo Kikai Seisakusho, Ltd. (TKS), with
the newspaper’s full cooperation, undertook development of the world’s fastest tower type shaftless web
offset press for newspapers, the Color Top Century, that will clock in at a speed of 100,000 copies per
hour (cph).
TKS has taken the lead in pushing the high speed barrier for newspaper web offset presses whenever
newer models were introduced. As a result, TKS is proud of its track record of many satisfied customers for
their Color Top 7000 series with a speed of up to 90,000 cph.
Although the Color Top Century may correctly be surmised as an extension of the growing lineage of prev-
ious Color Tops, it is noteworthy that a thorough and extensive rethinking in the construction and function-
ality of each section of the press was investigated resulting in an optimal design showcasing the benefits
of continually printing at 100,000 cph while achieving stable print quality. Furthermore, the folder section
is a jaw folding type which produces and maintains precise folds up to the 100,000 cph.
With the cooperation of its affiliate company, Kaneda Kikai Seisakusho, Ltd. (KKS), their BTC (Baton Touch
Carrier) single grip conveyor system has been incorporated into the folder system whereby the TKS IDCC
(Intra Direct Catch Carrier) grips each newspaper directly from the folder fan and then directly passes each
newspaper to each KKS BTC gripper (like runners passing on batons) enabling stable single grip delivery at
100,000 cph, and bypassing the traditional laying down of papers from the folder fan onto a conveyor belt in a
stream. In addition to its mechanical and electrical improvements, environmental considerations have been
given to such features as reducing noise, vibration, and ink mist, and fully suctioning paper dust, recycling
dampening water, and reducing power consumption, which is a design initiative to be kind to the environment
propagated along ISO14001 guidelines.
Next spring, the Century press will be assembled at the TKS Tamagawa factory and will undergo extensive
printing tests using various materials in cooperation with Kyoto Shimbun collecting data and performing inspec-
tions and analyses. The configuration of the two presses to be delivered to Kyoto Shimbun for printing 48
pages with 24 pages of full color is as follows:
2 x (Three 4/4 towers + three 2/1 towers + one folder + six reelstands).
Delivery and installation at the new plant is scheduled for November of next year.
