Whereas the norm in commercial web printing would be to run one web horizontally, TKS, in November of 2005, started development of the heatset tower type web press with the goal of further improved productivity underlined by the concept of achieving optimal space utilization, high speed but reliable printing, and superb print quality.<p> The Color Top 41000CMUD is a shaftless web offset press equipped with a unit drive system. The computer that controls this mechanism is a high-accuracy position controller, the Advanced Drive System (ADS), that is capable of controlling the plate cylinder surface to a resolution of 3¼m which makes it possible for synchronous control from low speed to high speed assuring superb registration. The overall specs are:<p> <ul> <li>Printing circumference : 1092mm </li> <li> Max. paper roll width : 880mm </li> <li>Max. cylinder revolution speed : 600 rpm </li> <li>Jaw folder and chopper folder : B4 (250 x 353mm) & B5 (176 x 250mm) products </li> </ul><p> The press layout consists of one unit each of: Reelstand unit  Infeed unit  4-stacked arch type printing tower unit  Air-turn device  Dryer  Chill unit; plus two folders. The overall height is 8.5m and the overall length including spacing for the stack-bundler and palletizing robot units is 25m. The printing unit includes such features as three ink form rollers, a continuous water feed dampening system, and inking cylinders with cooling devices.<p> Ghosting phenomenon is controlled by the oscillating ink form and water form rollers, and as the dampening roller is a force-driven type it is effective in preventing lint on the plates. The dampening rider roller has a bridging mechanism so that ink that is caught on the dampening roller can be returned to the ink roller, thus ink residue is kept to a minimum.<p> Further, with the use of the Rilsan roller for continuous ink feed, and segmented ink keys with special motorized screws that open and close stable ink supply is assured within a design geared for print quality during high speed printing.<p> The folding unit is a jaw type with the cutting cylinder, folding cylinder and jaw cylinder at a 2:3:3 ratio. By adding a chopper folding device and a vertical and horizontal perforator, a diverse fold specification can be met.<p> With straight and collect run selectability and a two-folder setup, folder dimensions of B4 (250 x 353mm) size of 4, 8 and 16 pages, B5 (176 x 250mm) size of 8, 16 and 32 pages are possible.<p> Additionally, by putting two lines facing each other and using a crossover device 2 webs can be overlapped to produce 32 pages of B4 size, and by attaching a folder unit to the BH-5000ED, 2-page products of B4 size can be produced.<p> By providing such features as lap adjustment on the fly, one-touch switchover between B4 and B5 sizes, presetting of former positions according to paper width, and the capability to track chopper timing speed a high level of folding precision can be assured for publication printing with the benefit of ease of operation and reduction in press makeready time.<p> Two sets of Color Top 4100CMUD have been delivered to Chubu Kyodo Printing Co.
